Mimi Johnson

Mimi Johnson, recipient of the South Bay Bruins scholarship in 2008, is a first year at UCLA taking advantages of all the university has to offer. She finds the array of opportunities in academics, sports, school spirit, and social life vast and simply amazing. Although still unsure of an exact major or career path, Mimi is considering double majoring in business economics and psychology, two subjects that she feels are rather pertinent at this time. She is currently taking a variety of lower division classes in both subjects in order to get a feel for both possible paths.

Mimi's transition from high school has been extremely smooth with the help of her friends and family. "My parents are always extremely supportive of me and my decisions and always promoted my education. That I had built a strong foundation with my family's help has certainly assisted me in acclimating to life at UCLA. But, naturally, I am continuing to adjust to living on my own."

Despite an intensive course-load, Mimi has found plenty of time to enjoy all of the social activities UCLA offers. As an active member of the Alumni Scholars Club, she "immediately felt a part of a smaller, more intimate community on such a large and sometimes overwhelming campus. I know that the relationships and friendships I have already established this year will carry throughout my college career and beyond." She loves meeting such new and diverse people and taking part in the community outreach and social activities of the club. In addition, Mimi is an active member of the Ballroom Dance and International Folk Dancing Club on campus. "Dancing is something that I used to do on rare occasions, but decided to join the club in order to learn different styles and choreography. That's what college is all about - trying new and exciting things." Also, her dedication to serving the community has carried over, as she has continued her work with students and adults with special needs on campus through Pathways and Best Buddies. Through her service, she enriches the lives of others, but in the process has learned the value of giving time to help others enjoy the college experience. Every weekend, one of Mimi's goals is to "adventure somewhere" new in Los Angeles. She feels that living at UCLA is perfect chance to explore the city in which she grew up but has never truly experienced to its full potential. From museums to plays to nightlife, and of course, sports, Mimi and her friends always find a way to enrich their college experience.

Mimi strives to take advantage of the great opportunities that UCLA has to offer and use her world-class education as a springboard to pursue her goals. "I simply cannot wait to see what lies ahead in my pursuit of education here at UCLA and beyond."
